At different times in our lives, we all grapple with fear. Whether it’s the fear of the unknown, fear of failure, or fear brought on by life’s storms, fear can be paralyzing.
But one of the most comforting aspects of the Bible is its recurrent message: “Fear Not.” In fact, there are enough exhortations to “be not afraid” that we could read a different passage every day of the year! It’s the most repeated command in the Bible.
It’s clear God knew we would be prone to fear, so he provided us with abundant encouragement to remind us we are never alone. Let’s look at 5 “Fear Nots” in the Old and New Testaments and see how they speak to us today.
Old Testament
God tells us to not fear an uncertain future.
We don’t have to dive very far in the Bible before we encounter God speaking to Abram (later known as Abraham) in the book of Genesis.
Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.
Genesis 15:1
Abram faced uncertainty about his future and his legacy, but God confirmed he would protect and reward him. God fulfilled his promise, making Abraham the father of many nations.
This message reminds us that even when the future looks unclear, we can trust God to be our shield and guide.
God tells us to not fear being overwhelmed.
Fast forward a few generations to the Israelites at the Red Sea in Exodus 14 . They were trapped between Pharaoh’s army and the vast sea, and fear was rampant.
Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today… The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.
Exodus 14:13-14
This is a powerful message for those times we feel stuck and overwhelmed. We need not become despondent; God is a God of breakthroughs.
God’s deliverance comes when we trust Him and sometimes just “be still,” knowing he is fighting our battles.
God tells us to not fear scary circumstances.
As the Israelites were about to enter the Promised Land, Joshua needed a pep talk. God commanded him:
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.
Joshua 1:9
If you’re moving into uncharted territory or feeling intimidated, know that God’s assurance to Joshua is just as relevant today.
Because God is on our side, we can take on new challenges with courage.
God tells us to not fear abandonment.
Embracing an enduring love for his people, God never abandoned Israel despite their hard hearts and rebellion.
So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
Isaiah 41:10
God’s assurances to the Israelites emphasize his presence, strength, and support in the lives of believers. Adopted into his kingdom, we are forever his children, and he is our “Abba Father.”
Isaiah 41:1 is a blanket of security—a powerful reminder that we are never alone.
God tells us to not fear being unheard.
In response to Daniel’s prayers, an angel visited him with words of confirmation:
Do not be afraid, Daniel. Since the first day that you set your mind to gain understanding and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them.
Daniel 10:12
These verses reinforce the truth that God hears our prayers and responds to our needs.
New Testament
Jesus replaces fear with Living Hope.
In the New Testament, the announcement of Jesus’ birth is one of the most joyous moments in history. When an angel appeared to shepherds in the field, they were understandably afraid. But the angel said,
Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people.
Luke 2:10
This fear not heralded the arrival of Jesus, the Savior, bringing joy and hope to the world.
It’s a reminder that in the midst of our fears, the good news of Jesus—the cornerstone of our faith—brings unshakeable “Living Hope.”
Jesus replaces fear with victory.
On Resurrection Sunday, an angel at Jesus’ empty tomb comforted the women who had arrived to anoint his body:
Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.
Mathew 28:5
Jesus had risen, defeating death and sin. We now live with confidence that life triumphs over death, good prevails over evil, and hope never disappoints.
Jesus will write the last victorious chapter to all the difficult stories of our lives.
Jesus replaces fear with affirmation.
Jesus often encouraged His followers not to fear. When he sent his twelve disciples to the towns of Galilee, he encouraged them to be courageous in the face of hostilities.
Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul… So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.
Matthew 10:28-31
Jesus reminds us of our value to God. Yes, the world can be unfriendly, but knowing our worth in God’s eyes can shift our perspective from fear to trust.
Jesus replaces fear with victory.
In John 14:27, Jesus offers this beautiful promise as he anticipates returning to his Father:
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.
John 14:27
In his farewell, Jesus offers his peace to his disciples, encouraging them to remain untroubled and unafraid. This promise of peace is available to all believers. It’s enduring and profound.
Regardless of the chaos and trouble we may face, Jesus’ peace can calm our hearts and minds.
Jesus replaces fear with eternal reassurance.
Last, in Revelation 1:17-18, John’s vision of the risen Christ overflows with reassurance:
Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.
Revelation 1:17-18
Jesus’ victory over death is our ultimate assurance. We need not fear because He holds our future, and his victory is our victory.
